Bentonite clay has many great benefits and different uses. One possibility is to use it as a deodorant. Maybe you never heard about that but I promise that it actually works! I tried many different ‘aluminium free’ deodorants just to realize they all don’t work over a long period of time. I began to smell after the slightest physical effort so I switched back to the normal deodorants with alumium. Then I did a lot of research about metals and their impact on our body.
That was the moment I decided again to switch to a natural deodorant and I finally found bentonite clay deodorants. The advantage is that you can produce the deodorant by yourself, that’s fun and you can control what’s inside. The following article shows you the benefits of a ‘natural deodorant’ and gives you a complete guide how to create your own. If you tend to be on the lazy site or you simply lack time we recommend you two great natural deodorants with bentonite clay that we use and you could buy.
Why Should I Even Use an All-Natural Deodorant?
Did the idea of making a homemade deodorant ever strike you? If you say no, then don’t worry, because most people won’t. But, before you use your regular deodorant sprays or sticks, just familiarize with the ingredient list and know how harmful they might be to your health. Here are some scary reasons why you shouldn’t wear the commercially available deodorants everyday.
1. Avoid Toxic Chemicals
Deodorants contain a myriad of toxic chemicals like Aluminum salts, Stearyl alcohol, cyclopentasiloxane, C12-15 alkyl benzoate, Hydrogenated castor oil, Phenyl trimethicone, petrolatum, talc, fragrance, mineral oil, cyclodextrin etc. Many of these chemicals pose serious health concerns to its users. Cancer, allergic reactions, hormonal imbalance, developmental disorders, neurological disorders, and problems in immune system are some side effects of toxic chemicals found in commercially available deodorants.
Aluminum salts: Deodorants use Aluminum salts as an active ingredient to control sweat and associated body odour. They act as a plug within the sweat ducts and stop the flow of sweat temporarily, However, these compounds are known to mimic estrogen in the body, which can increase the growth of breast cancer cells. There are a few aluminium free deodorants out there, but I was not convinced by the performance to be honest.
Parabens: Parabens are chemicals normally found in your everyday cosmetic products and in deodorants. Parabens prevent the growth of bacteria, yeast and mold, but studies clearly shows that parabens mimic estrogen and increase a women’s risk of breast cancer. In addition, they may produce adverse reproductive, neurological, developmental, and immune effects.
Triclosan: Triclosan is a registered pesticide commonly found in several soaps and other personal care products including deodorants. Studies show that Triclosan contributes to antibiotic resistant bacteria’s and alters hormone regulation. Other Triclosan related issues are allergies, thyroid dysfunction, inflammatory responses, and weight gain.
2.Avoid Skin Irritation
Deodorants can irritate your skin. Ingredients like triclosan and silica can cause skin irritation, itchiness, swelling , rashes or redness. Artificial fragrance, parabens, and alcohol are also prime suspects when it comes to deodorant-induced skin reaction.
3. No Effect Over Time
Deodorants become less effective over time. Scientist’s have hypothesized that the body unplugs the sweat ducts previously blocked by the aluminium salts in the deodorants with time. Hence, experts suggest switching brands every six months to avoid this occurrence.
So, you have seen the disadvantages of commercial deodorants and now you are concerned about your health. But, still you don’t want to smell bad…Don’t worry, without compromising your heath, you can stay fresh and odor-free. Benefits of Bentonite Clay Deodorant
Bentonite clay, also known as ‘the healing clay’, has a variety of beauty and health benefits. It is one of the best product to be kept in your cupboard because of its amazing detoxifying properties. Lets discuss on the benefits of a bentonite clay deodorant:
Helps Against Odor and Inflammation
Neutralizes body odor: When you switch to an all natural deodorant, you will experience excessive odor problem in the beginning, and bentonite clay can help. The negatively charged molecules in the bentonite clay gets attached with the positively charged odor-causing toxins, and thus neutralizes body odor.
Soothes inflammation: Continual use of commercial deodorants may leave dark scars and blemishes on your underarms. Bentonite Clay Deodorant is ideal for treating blemishes and thus scars. The removal of toxins can calm the underarm skin, reduce inflammation and heals scars. It also revitalize your armpits and make them look heathy due to the delivery of much-needed nutrients and minerals to the skin.
Keeps Skin Soft and Clean
Keeps skin soft, smooth and heathy: Bentonite clay deodorant draws out impurities like oil, dirt, and other toxins from the skin leaving it soft and visibly smooth and radiant. The Bentonite clay deodorant is negatively charged (as you already know) and has the ability to attract positively charged toxins from your skin; that is how the blemishes and dirt are cleansed and discarded. The exfoliation effect of the clay deodorant removes dead cells from your skin; that is how your underarm is soft, smooth and heathy.
Sucks out impurities, heavy metals, and toxins from the body including arm pits: Bentonite clay has the potential to suck out impurities from your skin. Bentonite clay molecules again carry a negative charge while toxins, heavy metals and impurities carry a positive charge. When you Bentonite clay deodorant in your armpit, the positively charged impurities gets attracted towards the negatively charged clay molecules. When you remove the clay, the impurities and toxins from the body also gets expelled. You see that bentonite clay deodorant exactly does the opposite than normal deodorant. Normal products bring aluminium to you while clay extracts them. That is absolutely crucial!
Reduce Redness Even After Shaving
Prevents rashes, irritation and bumps: Underarm rash occurs when the area of skin feels uncomfortable or looks unusual for more than a few hours. This often occurs due to heat, contact dermatitis and shaving the underarms. Heat mixes up with underarm sweat and causes itchy patches of bumps that are prickly, tiny, slightly raised and red. Contact dermatitis occurs when your skin comes in direct contact with any irritant or allergen. Shaving your underarm repeatedly, inflame and darken the skin and causes irritation and red bumps. When you use Bentonite clay as a deodorant, it prevents irritation, rashes and bumps. Bentonite clay absorbs the sweat, thus preventing it to form underarm rashes. In addition, the healing clay does not irritate you skin, thus acting as a natural deodorant.
Reduce redness: Your armpit is the perfect fit for irritation. These rashes are red and scaly, but the irritation and itch associated with them is unbearable. Redness in the armpit is mainly due to inflammation or an reaction of the sweat glands. The healing property of Bentonite clay deodorant soothes inflammation and reduces redness in your armpit. Additionally it calms the sweat glands.
Absorbs sweat: Bentonite clay has great absorbent qualities – it swells when you mix it with water. When you apply Bentonite clay deodorant in your armpit, it absorbs the sweat and clear out impurities.

DIY Bentonite clay Deodorant recipe without Baking soda:
This DIY recipe has no baking soda, but only the healing clay with a goodness of high concentration of minerals and nutrients. Many people find baking soda irritating to their skin and that’s why we don’t use it. Bentonite clay, the main ingredient in this recipe have various benefits. Let us jump into making DIY Bentonite Clay Deodorant;
You will need the following ingredients:
- 1 1/2 Tbsp Beeswax
- 4 Tbsp Coconut oil.
- 1 Tbsp Shea butter
- 4 Tsp Bentonite clay
- 20-25 drops of essential oil of your choice (You can use a mix of essential oils according to your likeness- there is no hard and fast rule for the addition of essential oil)
Essential oils like tea tree oil, lavender oil, rosemary oil, bergamot oil, lemon oil, or any essential oil of your choice can be used.
Once you got all the stuff needed we can start now with producing our deodorant:
- Grate beeswax and melt it with coconut oil in a low heat.
- Once the beeswax and coconut oil is fully melted, add in the shea butter. Please note you should not add shea butter until beeswax and coconut oil is fully melted. The reason is that, shea butter gets gritty and will not be pleasant, if heated for a long time.
- After adding shea butter, you can remove it from the heat and mix well, until all the shea butter has melted. It won’t take so long for the shea butter to melt completely.
- Once the shea butter is nice and liquidy, sprinkle Bentonite clay , whisk it well until it is nice and kind-of-creamy
- Now add in your favourite essential oil or mix of oils and combine well.
- Cool the pan in a cool water bath until it sets up a bit, but don’t let it solidify. You should still be able to pour it in deodorant containers and pop it in the freezer for 15 to 20 minutes or until it sets.
Okay I admit that this is a ton of work to do but it’s totally worth.
To be honest, I have not always the time to do it myself, so we present you products that we can recommend. The products are completely natural, without any harmful ingredients and they are mixed with bentonite clay. The first one is the one I normally use everyday.
Stick up Organic Natural Deodorant
This is our first recommendation and this is my favorite deodorant: Black Rogue Stick Up Natural Deodorant(check price on Amazon) uses lavender and peppermint essential oils for its aroma. This is a new formula all-natural deodorant that will help you de-stink before you want. This is one changed it all. Try it and you will see!
A few things worth noting are:
This is an activated charcoal infused deodorant stick, which has detoxification effect. However, it can also leave black stains on your dress if you rub a little too much.
One application will last for 24 hours, so you need not use repeatedly.
For it to work smooth on your skin, keep in room temperature and let it ‘warm up’ under your arm (this will take just a few seconds).

Consonant Pure Unscented Dealkalizing Deodorant:
We have a secound product for you that’s Julia’s favourite. I guess it’s because of the Cacao Seed Butter and Coconut Oil. She is in love with both but especially the cacao butter is in every of her body creams.
We can also recommend the Consonant Pure Unscented Dealkalizing Deodorant(check price on Amazon). Don’t get shocked by the price, there are two inside.
If you are in a hunt for natural deodorant, then you have come to the right place. Consonant Pure Unscented Dealkalizing Deodorant works ten time better than any other anti-perspirant.
Most deodorants use a bunch of anti-bacterial ingredients to eliminated the odor causing bacteria in your armpit. But, this one has taken a different approach. Since, odor causing bacteria thrives in an alkaline pH, this deodorant is formulated in such a way to bring your skin pH to acidic level. When your pH level is acidic, it is hard for odor causing bacteria to thrive in that environment, and so it dies. This product also uses, Bentonite clay and arrowroot powder in order to absorb moisture. The addition of Cocoa butter and coconut oil softens the skin and gives a good skin tone. Ask Julia!
- Unlike most of the natural deodorants, Consonant Pure Unscented Dealkalizing Deodorant come in stick form
- Stick form makes it easy to use.
- Very effective in absorbing sweat and prevents bad odor
- It has no harmful ingredients like propylene glycol or aluminum.
- Cacao Butter and Coconut Oil are AMAZING!
- The product is a bit chalky and difficult to apply.
- It leaves residue under your arms. I guess that’s normal for all natural deodorants.
It is one of the best natural deodorants available in the market. It is a bit expensive, but that’s ok, it will keep you smell fresh and feel good throughout the day.
