Toxic build-up can make our body suffer from a plethora of problems such as insomnia, chronic fatigue, headaches, and various debilitating ailments. A large share of these toxins originates from things we get exposed to every day. Examples include water, food items, personal care and beauty products, and last, but definitely not least, our environment.
Our environment is filled with several harsh pollutants, which shouldn’t stay in our body. Things turn even worse when we consume food and water contaminated with harmful chemicals and wastes. The only way we can protect our system from these toxins and allow our organs to function properly is by detoxifying it. The section below will educate you about things you can do to detox your body.
We start with bentonite clay, since we are ‘thehealingclay’ and that’s our favorite way to detox. We have various articles about bentonite clay benefits and uses but also other clays like kaolin clay. But sometimes you have to think outside the box and therefore we discuss other ways to detox in this article.
Consume Bentonite Clay for Complete Body Detox
Having been originated from ancient volcanic ash deposits on the surface of the planet Earth, bentonite clay has got a lot of time to absorb different minerals. The compound contains beneficial components such as magnesium, calcium and a series of trace elements (silica, potassium, zinc, iron, etc.). In short, it is a true nutritional powerhouse. Its use as a health tonic began several centuries back. Today, its use is widely recommended to people looking for a metal detox.
Metals such as copper and iron surely play vital roles in keeping us healthy. However, excess quantities of these metals can turn out to be hazardous. Metals such as lead and mercury, on the other hand, are toxic irrespective of the quantity we are getting exposed to. The liver can remove a large part of the excess metals absorbed by our system. However, things tend to get a bit smoother if it gets some assistance. Bentonite clay can offer that much needed assistance.
Thanks to its ability to work like a magnet bentonite clay is often referred to as magnetic clay. The clay comes with a negative ionic charge and heavy metals and the majority of the other harmful toxins you may get exposed to (these include pathogens and pesticides) carry a positive ionic charge. We all know that negative and positive charges attract naturally. So, it’s obvious that bentonite clay would successfully bind all those harmful toxins. The binding takes place when bentonite clay gets exposed to water (H2O) and turns porous. This means, if you are looking to detox your body using bentonite clay, consume it along with water.
Ideally, you should have up to 1 teaspoonful of the clay every day. For best results, add the clay to a jar filled with water. Shake the jar well to allow the clay dissolve in water and drink the mixture right away. Bentonite clay is either cream or gray in color. If the clay you are looking to use has turned white, it has most likely gone bad.
Food Detox: What Can I Eat to Detox my Body?
There are some food items that would help your body to eliminate harmful toxins. The section below would educate you about them.
Nuts and Seeds
Your diet should include easily digestible nuts and seeds like almonds, sesame seeds, cedar nuts, sunflower seeds, flaxseeds, walnuts, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, and hemp seeds. However, don’t commit the mistake of having nut butters when detoxing. They often contain added sugar.
Oils and Fats
Consumption of olive, avocado, flaxseed, or hemp oil is recommended if you want to detox beacuse these oils will work by lubricating your intestinal walls. The oil would thereby be able to absorb the intestinal toxins and eliminate them from your body.
Besides the above oils, you can also consume coconut oil when detoxing. Other than being a powerful cleanser, coconut oil also serves as a potent source of energy. To be more precise, the oil would aid the detox process by providing you enough energy when you are eating less food. I always take 1 teaspoonful of MCT oil in the morning.
If you want to try coconut oil detox, you should begin by consuming half teaspoon coconut oil half an hour before breakfast. Gradually increase your daily coconut oil intake to one to two tablespoons before each meal (breakfast, lunch, and dinner). You might need to wait for one or even two weeks feeling comfortable ingesting the oil. The actual detox process would begin once you start feeling comfortable ingesting the oil.
Cocout Oil Detox Instruction
During the detox process, you will only be allowed to consume coconut oil for lunch, dinner, and breakfast. You will have to start your day by consuming two tablespoons coconut oil. Follow this up by taking one or two tablespoons of the oil at regular intervals. You will have to take 14 tablespoons of coconut oil per day. In addition, it’s also mandatory to have two to three liters of water every day. During this phase, you must not take part in any strenuous physical activity (to be more precise: activities that would cause sweating should strictly be avoided). The process would continue for a maximum of five days.
Once you are done with coconut oil detox, you will have to follow a healthy diet plan for a week. Stay away from meats, sugary pastries, and fried foods and take several servings of fruits and vegetables each day.
Citrus fruits such as oranges and lemons are known for aiding digestion by eliminating toxins and promoting various enzymatic processes. Lemon juice supports the cleansing process of our kidneys and liver. To accelerate the detox process, you should begin your day by consuming a glassful of warm lemon water.
The other citrus fruit that should be a part of every detox diet is grapefruit. Grapefruit is a rich source of potent antiviral compounds and is an efficient liver and intestinal detoxifier. The Pectin fibers which are present in this fruit are known for binding to cholesterol and playing a vital role in cleansing our blood. Pectin even binds to harmful heavy metals and lends a helping hand in escorting them out of our system.
When looking for a body detox, you should consume plenty of raw vegetables. Veggies that would aid the process of detoxification include beet, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, kale, broccoli, cabbage, artichokes, onions, garlic, asparagus, oregano, etc. A diet consisted of the above food items will allow your liver to eliminate toxins more easily. These veggies are rich sources of glutathione and sulfur, elements known for aiding liver detoxification.
Berries, particularly blueberries and cranberries, are potent detoxifiers. Blueberries are rich sources of natural aspirin and are instrumental in reducing chronic inflammation and its tissue-destructing effects. These berries also come with antibiotic properties, which prevent production of bacteria in our urinary tract. The antiviral properties of blueberries, on the other hand, help in preventing toxins from gaining access to our brain by crossing our blood-brain barrier.
Cranberries are also capable of eliminating infection causing viruses and bacteria (specifically the ones causing urinary tract infections) from our system.
Berries often contain antioxidants which can help to catch free radicals inside your body. Free radicals are dangerous because they do damage to your cells.
Legumes & Beans
Legumes and beans come filled with fibers, which help in lowering cholesterol, cleansing the intestines, and regulating blood sugar. Legumes have also been found to reduce one’s chances of having cancer. Some beans and legumes that must be a part of your detox diet are split green and yellow peas, yellow, brown, and red lentils, cannellini, adzuki, chickpeas, kidney beans, etc.
Take Probiotics to Support Your Gut
First-rate probiotic supplements contain live and healthy bacteria capable of replenishing our gut environment. Regular intake of these supplements would result in formation of colonies with good bacteria in your gut. This, in turn, would make your GI tract inhospitable for the harmful microbes and they would soon start dying off in groups. I always take my probiotics right after waking up with my first glass of water.
Other than eliminating bad bacteria from your guts, the beneficial bacteria also offer the following benefits:
- Reduce heavy metals
- Break down pesticides sourced from various fruits and veggies you consume
- Excrete Bisphenol A (BPA), a detrimental industrial chemical found in plastic
- Adopt an active and more balanced lifestyle to improve your immunity
For your detox diet to work, you must adopt a balanced lifestyle. You must take part in activities that would make you sweat and maintain good hygiene. Having a good night’s sleep is also extremely crucial. You have to life a healthy lifestyle. Here are certain things you must do for experiencing a perfect body detox:
Taking a sauna bath at regular intervals is a must for keeping your system free of toxins. Sweat produced during sauna sessions does much more than just cooling you off. Sweating also results in elimination of xenobiotics and heavy metals from your system. A recent study conducted on the subject revealed that both infrared and traditional saunas can effectively remove cadmium, lead, mercury, and arsenic from our system. The effects were found to be more prominent in individuals suffering from extreme heavy metal toxicity. Sauna-induced sweating has also been found to remove BPA from our fat cells.
Do a sport or exercise for effectively flushing out toxins: Doing a sport or exercising on a regular basis is a great way of getting rid of toxic buildup. Intense physical activities promote lipolysis, a process marked by breaking down of our fat tissue. This results in release of toxins accumulated in the fat tissue.
Not a single body detox process would work if you fail to maintain good hygiene. These include washing your hands before every meal or after returning home, washing your plates and cups before serving food, and last, but not the least taking a shower.
Taking a hot shower every day is mandatory if you are trying to get rid of toxins. Running hot water through various body parts would kill harmful bacteria and boost immunity. It also improves blood circulation and induces lymphatic flow and thereby stimulates the process of detoxification through various excretory organs including skin, lungs, colon, liver, and kidneys. My favorite shower is the ‘scottish’ shower. You use warm and cold water in change to improve your circulation and wake you up in the morning.
Several studies conducted over the years have suggested that having a consistent sleep pattern is mandatory for any detox procedure to show results. According to experts, when undergoing detoxification, we should not only concentrate on eliminating toxins from our system but should also give our body adequate time for regenerating. This would be possible only if we can sleep well. The minimum sleeping requirement is eight to nine hours per night.
Avoid Certain Foods and Other Groceries
The section below talks about foods you should avoid when trying to detox your body:
Meat clogs up our bowels, promote bacterial growth in the guts, and holds back digestion.
Milk and Dairy Products
These food products are acidic to our body. Consuming milk and dairy products like cheese results in poor functioning of cells, which in turn impairs the detoxification process.
Wheat has been found to damage our intestinal lining, which eventually spoils our ability to absorb nutrients. Wheat gluten, on the other hand, irritates our gut and may cause constipation, indigestion, and bloating.
Other than being harmful for our liver, alcohol has been found to reduce the levels of various detoxifying minerals like magnesium and zinc.
Because of its tendency of promoting toxic buildup, caffeine is a big no no for anyone looking to get rid of toxins.
Other than the above food items, you should also stay away from packaged, frozen, and processed foods. That’s because those items are high in bad fats, sugar, salt, and a range of artificial ingredients. Staying away from building materials, household cleaners, plastics, or any place where toxins linger is equally crucial. Drink enough water and stay away from Coca Cola and other aerated beverages.
Don’t Drink Coca Cola, Drink Water!
You cannot expect your body to eliminate toxins if you don’t consume enough liquid. Remember, you shouldn’t keep having aerated beverages like Coca Cola. Such drinks would only increase the amount of toxins in your system and do nothing to help you get rid of your preexisting toxic buildup.
If you fail to drink enough water when trying to detox your body, you will end up drowning in your own noxious metabolic waste. That’s because water performs the job of transporting toxins and wastes and removing them out of our system.
Temporary fasting is a great way of eliminating toxins from your system. One possibility of fasting for body detox is called “water fasting” as you will be allowed to have water during the process. Water fasting usually lasts for 24-72 hours. We would advise you to not be on water fast for more than 72 hours unless you are under medical supervision. Other than enabling body detox, the process would also help you lose weight.
There are other multiple possibilities to fast, for example intermittent fasting. I normally use the 16/8 system, 16 hours fasting 8 hours eating and I am feeling great. At the beginning I even lost weight.
Improve blood Circulation for a Perfect Body Detox
If you want to get rid of all the toxins, additives, chemicals, and pollutants that have accumulated in your system, you must have a healthy circulatory system. That’s because all the harmful substances mentioned above can get drained via the circulatory system.
Our circulatory system can be divided into two segments, cardiovascular and lymphatic. Here are a few ways of keeping both up and running:
- Drink at least 2 to 3 liters of water per day
- Exercise regularly (this should include both strength training and cardio)
- Eat the right foods (we have already discussed what to eat and what to avoid in the above sections)
- Get a massage done from time to time
- Undergo lymph drainage therapies (manual)
Stimulate the Liver to Drive Toxins from Your Body
Here are the foods you should take for stimulating your liver for eliminating toxins from your system:
Adding garlic to your daily diet would help you in activating all your liver detox enzymes. The primary roles of these enzymes are breaking down the toxins and removing those wastes from your body.
Garlic is also known for being the source of as many as 39 antibacterial agents. So, consuming it every day would boost your immunity significantly. For enjoying maximum benefits, you should use organically grown fresh garlic.
Beet is a rich source of antioxidants and is often recommended to athletes looking to improve their performance on field. However, it also has a significant role to play in the liver detoxification procedure.
Beet works by activating bile and liver enzymes, which enable easy breakdown and absorption of healthy fats. If you include beet to your diet, your liver would find it easier to transform fats and various fat-soluble toxins into water-soluble components. This, in turn, would make the process of excretion easier.
Organic apples come filled with fiber. Adding this food item to your diet would enable regular bowel clearing and introduce beneficial bacteria to your gut. To get maximum fiber from the apples, eat the fruits with their skin on. For increasing the amount of fiber intake, you can have these apples along with chia seed custard or pudding.
Broccoli sprouts contain a substance called sulforaphane, which has several proven health benefits including the ability of promote liver detoxification. Additionally, researchers found out that sulforaphane can also increase our cells capacity and therefore adapting and surviving many environmental toxins.
Have a Detox Tea
Detox teas are basically herbal teas (often referred to as tisanes) prepared for aiding body detoxification. They are instrumental in flushing out various harmful substances and toxins from our body. Almost all detox tea blends used today have their origin in Ayurveda, Chinese medicine, and other forms of herbal therapies. Detox teas are mostly used for laxative effects, weight loss, and liver detox. Experts also recommend them for dealing with problems like overindulgence in drugs, alcohol, and heavy foods.
These days, many companies have come up with pre-blended detox teas. However, it’s easy to prepare your own detox tea at home. Some of the ingredients you can use include green tea, ginger, lemongrass, peppermint, chamomile, etc.
Perform Mental Detox
This one is so absolutely important and always underestimated. I myself meditate twice daily, in the morning and in the evening for about 15-20 minutes. I don’t do this with an religious background but for clearing my mind. Performing meditation is an effective way of clearing your mind.
Almost all advices provided above would help you carry out a body detox. However, the fact is that to be healthy, you must also detoxify your mind. So, when trying to get rid of all those harmful toxins in your system, you must stay away from all kinds of negativities. These include events and people that can make you feel bad or increase your stress levels.
Get a Detox Bath
Getting a detox bath once a week would not only detoxify your body but will also cleanse your mind by reducing stress levels. To get a perfect detox bath, you must first arrange all the supplies. The items you will need include 1 liter of spring or filtered water, a thick and warm bathrobe (you can also use a thick towel), facial serum, skin mist (pick a hydrating one), a medium-sized dry brush, and bath soak.
Instructions for a detox bath:
The bath soak plays the most vital role in this process. Add mix a handful of Epsom salt with half a cup baking soda. Once the two ingredients are blended perfectly, mix 10 drops of your favorite essential oil to a carrier oil like coconut or jojoba oil and add the oil mix to the dry mix you just prepared. Blend all the ingredients well and add the final mixture to a tub filled with warm water. Allow the ingredients to soak up water for 20 to 30 minutes. Your detox bath is now ready. The best essential oils to use for this purpose are lavender oil, peppermint oil, or cedarwood oil.
Use Skin Detox Masks and Wraps
You can do a bentonite clay face mask to detox your skin:
Skin Hydrating Detox Face Mask
Combine a teaspoon of bentonite clay and Manuka honey with enough water and form a thick paste. Apply it onto your face and wait for 10 to 15 minutes or until the mask starts feeling a little tight on your face (don’t allow the mask to dry up). Next, wash your face with enough water and apply a paraben free moisturizer. Do this once every week and you will have soft, glowing skin devoid of any acne or infection.
Seaweed Body Wrap
A body wrap is a wellness treatment. You have to wrap your body (or certain areas) into plastic and wait for 30 minutes for the warp to take effect. The process starts with a thorough exfoliation of your entire body. Removing the dead cells before wrapping you up would allow the seaweed to work more actively on your skin. Applying seaweed body wrap will tone your skin up, induce complete relaxation, and cause sweating for eliminating toxins from your skin. We wrote a complete guide to body wraps here.
Detox Your Rectum Using an Enema
If you don’t detox your rectum, your endeavour of having a toxin free body will never be successful. The easiest way of doing that is by using an enema. Other than detoxifying your system, the enema would also relieve constipation.
Take Supplements for Detoxing
Here are some supplements that can aid the body detox procedure:
This anti-oxidant compound plays a crucial role in cellular detoxification. It works by disarming the harmful free radicals and effectively cleans up the mess made by them before they can cause any serious damage to our body.
Alpha Lipoic Acid
ALA helps in upregulating the levels of glutathione by promoting production of other antioxidants like CoQ10 and vitamins E and C. It’s one of the best supplements you can have when looking to undergo liver and cellular detoxification.
Silymarin, the active compound of milk thistle is a potent liver detoxifying agent. Supplementation of milk thistle would boost production of two vital intracellular antioxidants, superoxide dismutase and glutathione.
